PBN Blues Series: “Shut Down Turn Off ” – Little River Band

Clients come and go, but some of them stay with us.  The ones that are the hardest are the ones that follow us home.  Not literally a client accompanying us to our domiciles, no.  I am referring to a case that just won’t let us go on with our days without thinking back to it.  Some part of it just seems to worry at us and we cannot let it go.

Self care and the ability to shut the book on the day is a big part of what it is to be a balanced person, and a successful magickal vendor/worker.  You come into contact with hundreds of people throughout the year.  Taking home spiritual contamination, and the worries of the world, will not allow you to be healthy and whole and effective.  You must draw the line, or be drawn down into an abyss of your own making.

As we do in this series, let us look at a scenario that speaks to this point.

The less healthy way to process this case

Ajanay W. has come to you with a serious problem.  She began a working over a month ago, under the advice of a friend with a book.  She did not do a divination, so was completely surprised that her life has now imploded.  Not only has she lost the objective she sought to keep, but she has suffered a huge personal set back.  Your heart bleeds for her and you begin to work together on her options, and select some appropriate tools and plans.

In this particular case, she decided to go for a the job position of a coworker.  She felt she was better qualified for the position.  Ajanay W.  did a petition spell and accompanied it with lamp magick.  Unfortunately for her, she did not word it correctly.  She also did not put in a way to undo what she had done.  She has now lost her job, been offered a job for half the pay at another company, and is seen as a troublemaker at her old one.

Ajanay W.  has come to you to try to fix her situation.  Not only did she not follow her friend’s advice, you strongly suspect that she will not follow yours.  You try to make sure you explain clearly what she needs to correct and wish her well.

For the next week, you find yourself thinking about Ajanay W..  You wonder if she is using the tools she purchased correctly.  You ask yourself if you could have added anything.  You replay your conversations in your mind and second guess yourself.  Even after knowing you were correct in what you did, you still keep worrying about her and her progress.  You even think of her at home.  You cannot let it go, and decide to just let it work its way out of your thoughts naturally.

A way that may be a better for your well-being

Before she does anything else, you put together a clearing bath mix for her. You advise her to reconstruct her petition, and then deconstruct it according to a standard technique.  You then advise her to switch from the lamp to a candle so that she can use small incremental changes to her course.  Because they burn for a shorter time, it will be easier to spot issues with her workings more swiftly and make appropriate adjustments.

That night, you find yourself thinking a lot about Ajanay W.  You find yourself bothered by recurrent thoughts of her welfare.  You recognize this is not the way you can maintain your separation from your business life.   You decide to create an affirmation that you repeat several times that ends the day for you.

Example:   And now it comes, the end of the day.  The cares of work are put away.  – Kenya Coviak/Mistress Belladonna

Short and sweet, but it is still effective.  Yours may be a lot longer.   For people who do ongoing work for clients, it will have to be customized to suit your situation.  But the idea is the same.  You also take the added steps of using a cleansing bath and an earth jar spell to shut down the unnecessary connections between you and Ajanay W.

You cannot pour energy from an empty cup, and in order to not leak, you must hold yours upright.  This means not letting others concerns tip you off-balance.  Work time is work time.  Let the laborer rest when the work day is complete.

PBN Blues Series: “Manish Boy” – Muddy Waters

by Kenya Coviak

As magickal workers, it is not uncommon for us to run across every form of the human experience.  Love, money, success, sex, health, and more are equally likely to walk into our realm of client concerns.  Having a full line of product choices in stock, as well as individual tools and components, is beneficial both to us and the customer.

Today, we look at sexy times.  Dealing with sex is always fraught with emotions and esteem issues for the client.  The fact that they are coming to you is an indication that their desire has motivated them to the point of action on a potentially embarrassing situation.  Most times, they will simply grab a reference book or a kit and purchase it without commentary.  But other times, you will find yourself in the role of adviser and sex therapist (if you are unlucky).

So now, we look at a scenario that can go a couple of ways at least.  First we shall have a scene where it may not be the best course of action.  Then a scene where it may be a better course of action.  Here we go.

What may, or may not, be the best way to go about this situation

Jody D. is a regular client at your shop.  He comes in from the auto plant every other Friday with the same order for Steady Work materials, and Fast Luck.  You have a pleasant rapport with him.  However, on this day he appears nervous and fidgety.  Instead of his usual easy mannerisms, he hangs back until all the other customers have been served before speaking to you.

Jody D. explains that he is having problems with his “nature”.  He just cannot please the ladies like he used to do and feels his body has let him down.  He has seen the doctor, and has decided against the little blue miracle pill.  He has come to you for another solution in the spiritual/magickal realm.

You grab some some deer velvet, burdock, and a few other things and send him on his way, telling him to wear it around his neck.  Quick cash for you.  You also offer to sell him an oil to use to supplement the blend.  No further discussion needed.  You have made the sales, and he has gone about his way, never to speak of this between you two again.  But did you give the best service?

Now, let’s try this another way

Jody D. is a regular client at your shop.

You know this is a delicate situation.  Your rapport is one you do not wish to jeopardize by being overly dismissive OR familiar with you client.  Respecting his emotional state, you come away from the front counter to another area of the store to give a greater appearance of  privacy.  You ask him how long this has been going on, and if there were any events that he can remember that happened around this time.

He does not really remember events.  But he does share how long.  You ask him to give you a moment to check on something in the back.  You do a quick divination, or intuition check, away from his presence so that you can be more objective.

After having a moment to think, you come back to Jody D.  and ask him what it is he is actually feeling he would like to do.  Would he like to burn candles, use oils, or use herbs.  If you offer the service, you may offer to do work for him, or let him burn the candles at your store altars.  You may also, if he is open, give him some affirmation, chant, or psalm, to work.  This depends on both your, and his, spiritual tradition.

Under no circumstances do you guarantee results.  You tell him that he did not get this way over night, so it will not be solved overnight.  You stress that this is a continual working, and that only he can decide how effective it is, and how long it needs to be repeated.

But you also, as a practitioner, know the power of positive expectancy.  Therefore you let him know that the fact that he has chosen a course of decisive action and control will greatly boost his endeavors.  This will also restore some of his confidence.  Remind him that spiritual work also needs physical anchoring in the mundane world.  He is to make lifestyle changes that will facilitate good health.  He must research these, as this is empowering him as well.  You have also projected to him that he is strong in his conviction, and that this strength will make his work strong as well.

Jody D. leaves with his purchases that you have both agreed are within his budget and comfort zone.  You let him know that if he wishes, he can discuss this with you again in a few weeks, but you will not be prying.  He leaves feeling hopeful, and you have served your customer well.  It is hopeful that he will be successful in his quest to improve his “nature”.  A good song to play if you do a visualization for him would be “Manish Boy” by Muddy Waters.

PBN Blues Series: “Bad Penny” by Rory Gallagher

by Kenya Coviak

Thank you for joining us, once again, for our PBN Blues Series.  This entry will address a common working requested by clients that you may run into from time and again.  The subject addresses how to help a client who has turned their life around to a positive path only to find that they cannot get a member of law enforcement to let them move on.

As a practitioner in the business of dealing with the magickal/spiritual world, you will encounter clients from all walks of life.  Pillars of the community will have their names mixed with the criminal on your roster.  It is up to your own conscience what sort of services you provide.  In this example, the business owner is open to performing work for all clients without judgment, so this particular customer felt comfortable in bringing this matter to the counter.

Jodi W. has a problem.  She at one point was a member of a notorious and violent street gang.  Several years ago, she had a life changing epiphany and decided that her old life and associations were no longer for her.  A moment of clarity, and  gunshot wounds to the chest, gave her a “change of heart”.

But the aftermath of her redirection has taken her into a world of fear and harassment from  her former gang to resume her old activities. Also, a police duo that has made it their personal mission in life to bust her.  Neither group believes that she has really changed.

Jodi W. comes to your shop for help in getting peace in her life and ending the constant intrusions on her life.  Upon further discussion, you find that moving away is not an option.  She is the caregiver of an ailing family member.  So the solution must address this as well.

Quick cash, but is it thorough

You decide to give her a Law Stay Away Candle, and some Compelling oil.  The first for the police, the second for her former constituents, in order to keep them away.  You advise her how to use them, and tell her to come back in two weeks to resupply.  Your client leaves, you count your money, and end of the tale.  This is all she could afford today, so this is all the service she will get from you.

Perhaps a bit more care and a bit more customer service

Jodi W. comes to your shop for help in getting peace in her life and ending the constant intrusions on her life.  Upon further discussion, you find that moving away is not an option.  She is the caregiver of an ailing family member.  So the solution must address this as well.

This is where looking at the whole scope of what is going on in her life comes into play.  Several factors are in this case.  The use of candles is an option here, however, since there are layers of issues it would be appropriate to work on many layers of defense and protection to fix this.

Because you are actually engaged with the client, you have been able to reason out and prioritize what  concerns are most pressing.  This is a multifaceted set of circumstances.  You explain that it has to all be handled in little bites.

Jody W. may not be able to afford everything at once.   You set up an approach that can accomplish things little by little over time.  This is where understanding how to assess the client’s conditions are important.

First issue at hand is that of the police.  A casual observer might have placed this concern after the gang members.  But this would be a mistake.  The organization wants her to return and work for them, so they are not currently as threatening to her movements.

The team, let’s call them Officers Wilson and Pickett, are actually really good people.  But good people can become jaded in  any profession.  They have seen it all, and don’t like any of it.

So over the years of dealing with the person that she once was, they have placed her into a box in their minds that identifies her as criminal for life.  And with the powers that have been entrusted to them comes a lot of leeway for being overly zealous for her “type”.  Driving by her home every shift, stopping her randomly to ask her what where she is going, and them randomly showing up to her job has become a living nightmare for Jody W.  She has even lost employment over this pattern of behavior.

So the first priority is to secure her home, person, and workplaces from torment.  You suggest a penny spell as quick perimeter ward for her home.  A combination of oils, including Law Stay Away, is added to her supplies along with appropriate candles.  Finally, as a first step, you decide to help her put together a banishing work to remove their influences.

Jody W. expresses concern that her past associates will eventually get tired of waiting and may turn violent in their insistence.  She lights a cigarette in the back parlor of your store, and you allow it as you are zoned to permit this small calming practice.  You let her take a moment, and then get calmly proceed to address the protective workings that are on the list you  completed at the counter.

In the matter of the gang members, you list a set of workings that included banishing, red brick dust, protection, and a shut up spell for good measure.  Being a bit proactive, you also suggest poppy seeds and calumus root be added to a component list in order to confuse their efforts.  This will take time, and the client has been instructed of this.   You also suggest she work with whatever spiritual guardian energy is in accord with her new belief system.

For later visits, you have assorted components for bettering her employment situation.  Boss Fix mixed with Bend Over oil is at the top of the list, of course.  You make sure to voice your support for her decision to leave the old life, without being judgmental.  A smile and a good word are worth more than you know, and genuine good will helps to create a good place in her mind regarding you.

She purchases what she can afford, and makes a shopping list.  You duplicate this list and keep it at the counter, so that steps and purchases can be marked off as they are picked up.  You set a small box to the side that has her initials on it.  This contains her items so that they will be ready for pick up.  This is possible because you have a rapport.  Jody W. leaves, and you have served your client in a reasoned fashion.

There were a multitude of ways to handle this client’s issues.  This way is not the only way, and may not be one of the best ones out there.  However, it does take the time to look at all the parts of the case so that the client has the best outcome possible.  Sometimes it is not about “cash and dash”.  Especially when dealing with the people from the past who keep showing up like bad pennies.

PBN Blues Series: “Tell it like it is” – Aaron Neville

A spiritual worker for hire should never be so obsessed with money that they lie to their clients.  When deciding how to proceed in a job, it is of utmost importance to remain focused that it is exactly that, a job with a finite amount of involvement in this client’s life.  One should never make a career out of an client’s life path.

That being said, one of the ways that integrity shows is to be truthful with your client.  Be mindful that you are not overly offensive or blunt, but speak plainly and with compassion.  Seek not to inflame, nor to exert negative influence.  Be impartial, yet always on track for the best possible choices and paths for the client.

As we will often do in this series, let us entertain two examples of a situation.

A way that may not be the best for the client

Messilina T. walks into your shop and has an issue.  She is in the middle of a dispute involving a roommate.  Both sides have become angry and are not seeing eye to eye enough to even speak to each other at this point without screaming.  She has decided to hex the roommate in order to make her complacent and bend to her desires.  She has come to you for your advice on custom work.  You agree that she should do this.

You find, after speaking with her at length, that the issue is that she has decided to adopt a pet.  The roommate is allergic to pets.  She has decided to overpower the roommate and force her to live with the situation and abide.  She eyes the calamus root, a skull candle, and some other wares.  You encourage her in the situation, add your own spin on the working, and sell the collection of tools.

Two weeks later, the situation has become more volatile.  The roommate has blown up and they are almost at blows.   You decide to amp up the spell work and advise her how to do so.  It continues to escalate, and then you have an unhappy customer, one with a lump on her head and a restraining order.

A way that may be a bit more desirable

Messilina T. walks into your shop and has an issue.  She is in the middle of a dispute involving a roommate.  Both sides have become angry and are not seeing eye to eye enough to even speak to each other at this point without screaming.  She has decided to hex the roommate in order to make her complacent and bend to her desires.  She has come to you for your advice on custom work.  You ask more about the situation and state that it is important to hear the whole story, since she has decided to come to you for custom work.

You find, after speaking with her at length, that the issue is that she has decided to adopt a pet.  The roommate is allergic to pets.  She has decided to overpower the roommate and force her to live with the situation and abide.   You ask her if she has considered that the addition of a pet could be harmful to the roommate, and asks if she has gotten a divination on the situation in order to examine her choices moving forward.  You explain that divination could give her a clearer focus.  She does not agree.

A thoughtful moment - Richard Mauch

As a responsible worker, you know that the situation will escalate, as a normal person will not agree to allow something that will bring them harm.  In this case, the roommate would not sanely comply with the addition of a pet that would compromise their health.  Therefore, it would be better to do a work on how either the living condition can be changed, possibly a St. Expedite Spell.

It would also be important to work on the income and money management of the client so that she will have a choice in whether to stay or go.   You attempt to explain that magick cannot turn people into mindless zombies, and that she should consider what is doable in the current situation if she stays.  And lastly, you may also suggest a reconciliation working in order to normalize communication in the home to mend the rifts.  (This would be followed up by a clearing and blessing of the home).

Be prepared

Messilina T. may not want to hear this.  She is angry, hurt, and a little bit selfish right now.  There is a strong chance she may reject your counsel.  At this point, your can proceed to serve her or turn her down.  She is free to do her own work, of course.  Or she can find another worker.

She decides that she wants to banish her roommate.  She purchases a bottle of Four Thieves Vinegar and a multitude of bottles.  Her plan is to clear out the roommate and anyone else who is on the roommate’s side.  You complete the transaction and watch her leave.  Ultimately, it is her decision.

Dietmar Rabich, rabich.deThe important thing is that you have maintained your integrity, as well as ensured that the caliber of your work is not compromised.  Your wisdom in understanding that doing futile working will damage the client and your own reputation has saved you unneeded drama.  And this is all achieved by telling it like it is, being forthright, and being a better magickal business person.

As a trade, we do not sell morality.  At our best moments we can attempt to educate the client so as to assure a desirable outcome.  But never forget that they have not come to the shop in search of morality lessons.  Just serve the truth and let it ride.
