WE Can Make America Great, Again

I refuse to allow myself to think that we have voted for the worst parts of humanity. I refuse to believe that Xenophobia, Homophobia, Islamophobia, Racism, and Anti-Femimism,are the things that won yesterday.  I refuse to believe that I must now fear that my neighbors, friends, and allies and family members will be rounded up, snatched from their homes and livelihoods and sent to Conversion Therapy, “back” to Africa, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, India, etc. or killed. I refuse to believe that I or anyone in my community should be or must be afraid to wear headwraps,Pentacles, Afro-Centric attire, jilbabs, abayas, afros, braids, locs or anything else cultural or religious.  I refuse to believe that people who I know and care for; wonderful, loving, kind, accepting and beautiful people who I interact with everyday, that I have prayed with, manifested with, casted with…, hell shared beers with would “not care” for my and all those I share intersectionality with to elect someone who  could cost us health,  safety, and autonomy. I refuse to ever again comfort my children and dry their tears because they fear their friends will have to leave school because their families are from afar.

No. I refuse to think or do any of this. Because I know better, I am better, and I know WE are better.

What I believe is that Fear has created a Servitor, and fear won, on both sides.  From the Tweets, Facebook posts, News pundits, family fights, unfriendings, hate crimes, hashtags and conflicts that both fan and foe of President-Elect Trump are guilty of, if nothing else is clear, what is, is that we have been operating in fear and have manifested exactly what we have focused on.

a83a1720c83acc66398cdf4a8f0174bd

Fear drives hate; hate is just fear unchecked. One side is fearful of nuclear war, marginalization, further loss of jobs and industries, and moral decay. The other is fearful of social justice setbacks, loss of economic safety nets, mobilization of the worst members of society,  theocracy, and, well, conservatism. Mix all of this with the fact that a lot of people have a “my way is the right way” attitude( yes, even we Pagans) and you have a recipe for mayhem.

At any rate, what’s done is done. President-Elect Trump,  while not having the majority of the popular vote, fairly won the needed number of Electoral votes. His party has the majority seating in both House and Senate. If his acceptance speech is any indication, the times of division, rancor and stalemate in Washington, D.C. are over and he seems set up to succeed. May Justice, Fairness, and Truth guide him as he leads this country.

Where our focus should lie now, is with being and molding the best humans that we can be. We can kill the Servitor that we have created by intentionally chosing to operate in an opposing energy.  That energy, Friends, is Love.

I choose to believe that we can make this country great again by choosing to be great people. I choose to believe that we all want what is just and best for humanity.  I choose to believe that everything will be well and will get better.  I choose to believe that we all know and recognize the Divine/ Ultimate Potential in each other and ourselves, and will treat each other accordingly. I believe that we ALL abhor the evils of Racism, Xenophobia, Islamophobia, Sexism, Homophobia, and the like. I also chose to believe that we as people will band together and fight these monsters wherever they may appear. I chose to believe that all that was wished to succeed is a change in politics as usual and to give an outsider a chance. I chose to believe that the hope for Change won over a promise of the same. I choose to believe that we all will protect them those whom injustice targets with all we have.

I choose to stop contributing to this Servitor by feeding it with hate, vengeance and division. I acknowledge that I have contributed to and been influenced by It. But I know I am better, and you are better. I know my coworkers are better,my neighbors are better. I know that by you and I treating ALL humans with Love,Kindness, Friendship, and Respect we can defeat the Hate that Hatred has produced.  I believe that we can disagree and still be civil.  I know we will not let our great society devolve into Nazi Germany or 1950’s America as so many fear. We are too great for that. And only by us remembering this, and committing to make our society better one interaction at a time, with all that we come across can we achieve the goals laid out in President-Elect Trump’s acceptance speech:

Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division; have to get together. To all Republicans and Democrats and independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.
It’s time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me…
I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country. I’ve said from the beginning, ours was not a campaign, but rather an incredible and great movement made up of millions of hard-working men and women who love their country and want a better, brighter future for themselves and for their families. It’s a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds and beliefs who want and expect our government to serve the people, and serve the people it will.

I know we as people, as Humans can do this. only by suspending the fear mongering that has consumed the last 2 years and acting out of love towards all from love of ourselves can we defeat this evil that has infiltrated society.  We know better, we are better,  we can do better, and as Magickal Practitioners and Earth lovers we must do better. Espouse the Good, reprimand the evil, Love all and always love.

PBN Blues Series: “Bitter End” Rag’n’Bone Man

Friendships and relationships make the backbone of common casework for many practitioners. Beside money issues, they reign as the giants of the topics for concern for the professional practitioner. Clients are humans, after all, and they cannot avoid the interactions that come with the human experience. Because of this, relationship issues are bound to come up sooner or later.

As a practitioner, you could very well specialize in this field and make a pretty good income. It can make or break a career if you become known to either be successful, or abysmal, in this field. This is why it should be handled well, if at all. Matters of the heart are always delicate, and a attention to detail is important when deciding how to engage a case.

Cut and dried it would seem

Penzobia B. is a peer level practitioner. She is up there with the best of them, but for some reason she cannot seem to shake a spell of bad luck that seems to keep cycling. She performs road opener works consistently, yet nothing sticks. Divination is unclear in its results for her, and dream work is not lucid in this matter. She wonders if she has somehow just run into a bad patch, or if something else is going on in her world.

After speaking with Penzobia B., you find that she recently ended a friendship of many years. This person is also a magickal and spiritual practitioner. You ask if she ended the friendship in anger, and she states that while there was a anger on one side, she already detached from the relationship due to negativity on the part of the former friend, so she felt nothing insofar as emotional distress. In fact, she felt a bit unburdened by having to keep up her half of the relationship after years of swinging back and forth between betrayal and neediness.

You surmise that her bad luck stems from her own suppressed feelings of guilt. You tell her to forgive herself, and bathe in hyssop. You also tell her to write a letter to the Universe asking for release from her bonds with that person, then burn it. You sell her the bath, and go about your day.

Normally, you might suggest a simple purification, however you also know that when practitioners are involved, things get deep sometimes. Upon doing a reading, you at first have the same issues. Disjointed information and nonsensical lines. But you are not new at this. You know “work” when you see it.

You cleanse the area, and client and self, with a blend containing eyebright and some other herbs, and try again. That is when it becomes clear. There is definitely work, and it is, indeed, the former friend. She, and an accomplice, are using a grey candle trap to avoid detection, and adding lavender to the works in order to lull the target into a calm state. This is an insidious form of magick, as it has a veil on it that make Penzobia B. feel nothing is really wrong, as she is always being soothed no matter how badly events occur.

Also, the spells have been formed in such a way as to reattach after being dismissed. They are feeding upon the continuous loop of doubt and fire magick. This is a tricky one, you will give her that much credit. Walnut shells are not the simple fix here.

You and Penzobia B. review the results of the divination and devise a case plan to dismantle, counter, and destroy the attacks. Because she was attacked, she decides that the “gloves are off” and buys spell components designed to twist a sufficient amount of curse work back to the assailant. She make her purchases, and you strengthen our professional networking relationship with her. You also do an additional cleansing and some grey work to deter mischief.

Knot Magick

A few years back, a member of the circle I was then a part of brought a photocopy of some info on knot magic to our ritual, and we read it, and tried it out.

It was an interesting experience, one that I want to share with you.

Knot magic at work. Photo: Janet Callahan

It turns out the copies I was given years ago are a chapter from DJ Conway’s book, Wicca: The Complete Craft.  I don’t own a copy, but Google Books has it in their library.  The internet is an amazing thing….

Knot magic has been used for hundreds (probably thousands) of years. Many of the various Goddesses of Fate are weavers, who tie  and loosen knots all the time. And there are lots of stories of sailors buying knotted cords from witches and wizards, in order to make the wind blow if their ships were stalled.

Looking back to that bit about the ships tells us something important about knot magic: more than anything, it’s something of a battery, storing energy up for when we need it. And frequently, the energy stored is something natural – wind, the full moon, the dark moon….

An organized witch might, then, prep many different cords with knots, each cord representing a specific type of energy they might need later.

Another obvious use of knot magic is to bind.  That is, after all, the definition – to tie something securely.  Equally, the untying of knots can be used to symbolize the dissolving of a problem.

Even our weddings, both Pagan and more mainstream use knot magic and knot imagery – to get married is to “tie the knot” in the mainstream world, and our handfastings typically involve an actual cord being tied around the hands of those being joined.

So, how would one use knot magic to store and use energy?  The example given in the pages I have give some good examples, and this is basically what we did that night so long ago.

For the full moon, pick a silver or dark purple cord. While the instruction say to use a 2-3 foot cord, I’d suggest 39 inches – 13 x 3 – for best effect. You want cord that is not too slippery (satin cord, for example, does not hold knots well), and not too stiff (we used 1/8″ gross-grain ribbon, which was pretty hard to tie because it was stiff).

On the full moon, cast your circle and perform any other ritual things your tradition recommends before your working.

Use a full moon incense, and cleanse the cord in the incense smoke. Stand somewhere in the moonlight, making sure the moonlight has touched all of the cord.

Now, you will tie nine knots, from one end of the cord to the other, while reciting this chant (or something like it):

Knot of one, this spell’s begun.
Knot of two, the power is true.
Knot of three, my will shall be.
Knot of four, I gather more.
Knot of five, moon power is alive.
Knot of six, the power I fix.
Knot of seven, moon magic leaven.
Knot of eight, this spell is fate.
Knot of nine, the threes are trine.
I gather moonbeams in this cord, according to my magic words.
Moon power is stored here on this night for magic good and strength so bright.
(chant from Wicca: The Complete Craft)

Then finish out your ritual and close your circle.

When you later wish to use that stored energy (for example, you need to do a spell that normally requires a full moon, but the moon is now just a tiny sliver), take your cord and your full moon incense, set up your ritual as you normally would, and during your working, you untie the knots from one end to the other, visualizing the full moon energy flowing into your hands, using the following chant:

I open the door to the power beyond,
The moon gate that has an Otherworld key.
Unending power flows into my hands.
This is my will and so shall it be.
(chant from Wicca: The Complete Craft)

Then do the rest of your working as if there is a full moon, and then close out your ritual as you typically would.

Foreshadow

Foreshadow
She heard a cry in the night
It shook her from her sleep
She sat up in the full moon bright
Her sorrow stuck her deep
She listened to the Owls screech
The howling Wolf in the wood
She knew she wouldn’t fall asleep
She shouldn’t if she could
Goddess Nature was calling
Soon Her tears poured as hard as rain
She could feel her heart falling
Lightening ignited the pain
She stood and cried in the storm
Let the water heal where she felt torn
Nature mirroring how she felt
her sadness soon began to melt
She got it out
that broken heart
Through the storm
a brand new start
She crawled back into bed
With only darkness to see
A smile spread across her lips
She whispered “Blessed Be”

PBN Blues Series: “Friend of Mine” – Kelly Price, featuring Ronald Isley

Today we will look at one of the encounters where the client is doing work a family, or friendship, in a crisis situation.  Special handling comes into the fray when doing this work.  Especially challenging are the times when betrayal has occurred and the client is conflicted about what they really want to happen.

As a professional, you have probably encountered the very real situation of a client breaking down into a sobbing wreck in front of your counter.  The grief and misery so pervasive in their aura spread through the atmosphere like oil atop water.  Being the stone in storm at this moment will give your client a clear sounding board that will allow them to make focused decisions in their purchases and intentions.

Tears clouding the vision

Pasha A. comes to your shop looking for a way to get over a betrayal of her wife and her best friend.  They caught completely by surprise that morning with a earth shattering set of announcements.  Firstly, that they are in love.  Secondly, that her wife, Florise A., is divorcing her.  Finally, she was then informed that since the house is in Florise A.‘s name, she must be out within 48 hours.  If she does not comply, they will destroy all of her property and set the ruins outside while she is at work.

Pasha A. is in emotional trauma mode.  She still loves her wife, and is awash in turbulent emotions she has toward her former friend.  She wants to make it all go away.  Anger, hurt, and panic are all swirling in her life right now.  She has come here for some emergency magickal measures.

You look at Pasha A. and tell her that if she buys a reconciliation kit that all will be well.  There is nothing else you could recommend.  You also remind her to hurry up and make her purchase, since she has to start packing.  Transaction completed, you go back to your day as she walks slowly out of your shop.  After all, not your problem, right?

Facing the storm with empathy for the client

Pasha A. is in a compromised mental and emotional state, thus is not thinking clearly.  What you sell her now may line your till, but ethics here should come into play before you just foist any thing at hand on her without thinking.

ENGAGE THE CLIENT WITH PROFESSIONALISM TEMPERED WITH EMPATHY

Miedo-ajeno
Miedo-ajeno

You take both of her hands into yours and flood her with calming energy.  You need her to be able to focus on the here and now.  Magick is not instantaneous when it comes to major workings, and you explain this to her.  It can help, but like anything else, it can only do what it can do with time.  Something that she has very little to spare.

You begin to ask her questions about her situation.  Is she safe right now?  Has she contacted the police about her rights as a spouse and resident of the home?  You tell her to do this after immediately after she leaves the store, because the sphere of opportunity is a major part of magick.  If she wants the spiritual to work, she has to do the mundane work as well.

You make a mojo hand for her containing High John, and other items, for her to carry during this situation to remove anything standing against her.  You also sell her some Low John to influence the police, courts, and everyone else that in this matter.  A bag of magnetic sand goes into the order as well as a single dram of rose geranium oil.

Petition work ranks up to the front of your mind. You also give Pasha A. some emergency numbers on a small card to call.  Having these resources on hand is a good practice.  Part of being a member of the neighborhood community is being part of the village.

In regard to the two women causing affliction for Pasha A., choices loom.  They can not be made in this moment, or they might be rash.  How to handle them will come up in this scenario, and their logical consequences, bear weight.

Depending on the beliefs of the client and the worker, you have some options.  She may decide to banish them from her life.  She may bind the other woman and try to reconcile the marriage.  She may decide to punish one or both of them with enemy work.   Or she may just leave it in her deity’s hands.  But if it is a magickal working, you must decide if you can accommodate her desired resources in accord with your own practices and mores.

Pasha A. decides that dealing with her present situation is more pressing and decides to put off dealing with their punishments later.  And yes, she has decided to punish them, at least for now she has.  She leaves your shop with her purchases, instructions, phone numbers, and some breathing room.  And you have just correctly assisted your client with excellent customer service.

An In Depth Interview with Shetan Noir – Goddess, Witch, Belly Dancer, Author

SHETAN PROFILE JEEP Shetan Noir is a Michigan based award winning belly dancer and Pagan writer. She is an active member of the Great Lakes Witches Council and Motor City Belly Dance Show. She has written many books and is working on several new book projects. She also writes articles for various magazines and websites such as Circle magazine and examiner.com.

Please tell us how you got started on your spiritual journey.

There were too many things in the bible that didn’t make sense to me and I found I had intolerance for it. So I decided to go on my own path which led me to the path of the Pagan. I studied ceremonial magic but it is really complex compared to hoodoo and folk magic. The folk and the hoodoo magic really appealed to me with their simplicity and effectiveness, a candle to carve, herbs, intention and done. This really resonated with me so I embraced these systems.

At what age did you realize that you were a Witch?

At 16, my father’s mother came to me and let me know she had passed on. When my family came to give me the news, I shocked them by telling them she had died before they had a chance to tell me. Throughout my life, I have had dreams that let me know someone has passed. Once my phone rang and woke me up and I heard a message being left saying, “Tell your mom I will meet her at the cemetary for the burial.” When I went to tell my Mom, she said, “Oh that was my mother.”  Now my grandmother was already dead. Both me and my mother heard the phone ring and so did my dogs but there was no trace of the message on the answering machine. So at around 16 I realized that there is more to what we do than we are doing and that there are greater powers out there.

Please tell us about your book, Intro to Hood magic: Modern Magic for the Urban Pagan.

About 5 years ago at Convocation,  a four day event where I have taught for many years. I had friends within my circle that kept coming up to me and asking about hood magic because they didn’t comprehend it. It wasn’t until the Friday before the event that I actually looked at my bio on the program and saw that instead of putting that I practice hoodoo, they put down that I practice and teach hood magic! So I was showing it to my friends not knowing what to do and my friend David Smith said to just own it and go with it. What’s funny is that I used to always wear a black hoodie and so people were wondering if when I pull my hood it’s a sign that I am casting against them. I decided that I would write a book and create a workshop on hood magic for the following year.

There are people who felt that the term “hood” means an inner city war zone type of place but this book encompasses what you have to work with in any type of neighborhood, from rural to inner city. Some people live in condos and apartments and want to know how to grow their own plants on their balcony or how to do a fire ceremony without a yard and a place to create a fire. I did catch quite a bit of flak for it when it first came out because of the assumed meaning of the term hood. I might be from the country but I have also experienced the mean streets of inner city Detroit and no matter where you live, you can use this book.

I like the sound of the chapter, “Making Your Own Luck”. Please tell us about that chapter.

This goes along with what the whole book Hood Magic stands for. It’s about using what you have to turn things towards your favor. When you are asking your Gods and Goddesses for what you want, it often boils down to your mental state. If you are coming from a place of gratitude, things come more quickly but if you come from a place of feeling low or inundated with bad luck, you might get something but what you get might not be in line with what you want. This can also happen if you are not being specific about what you want.

I have a great story to share about this. I had been doing a petition spell each week for good fortune and abundance and everything was going great. Then I was at a jazz festival doing tarot readings but it wasn’t going very well. Apparently psychic readings don’t go over very well at these types of events. One person looked at me and said, “You’re one of those spell casters, do something.” So I got up and took the $2 that I made in tips and went outside to give them to the people who would most benefit from the money while asking that it be returned to me tenfold. I saw some street performers and gave one of the dollars to them. Then I found a homeless man that I gave the other dollar to. As I was walking back down the street, there was a man there handing out sample containers of a well named brand of hummus. As I walked by, the man turned around and gave me a big box of hummus samples. It had like 500 small samples. Then a man who was handing out pita chip samples handed me a box of those samples to go with my hummus so I got the “abundance” I asked for but hummus was not exactly I had in mind and I was eating hummus and chips for months. The event had to end early due to the weather and I said, “Well, I didn’t make much money today but I have lots of hummus to eat”.

Please tell us about your book, The Other Side of the Coin: Spells to Enrich your Bank Account and Life (Volume 1).

I took quite a bit of time researching that one because everyone was coming out with prosperity books but their books weren’t doing any better than mine. So I decided to research prosperity magic through hoodoo. I found a wealth of information and tried to put as much into it as I could. It’s not just about hoodoo but contains information from various cultures all over the world. Each culture has its own group of deities and you can always find at least one or two of them that are dedicated to prosperity and happiness. I didn’t want to leave any out in order to show respect to all of them.

What is your favorite prosperity herb/stone combination?

I like pyrite and emeralds for stones. For herbs, I love to grow orange mint, cinnamon basil for its dual action. I also like St. Michael’s holy basil. If you plant it at the front door of your house it will ward off evil and promote prosperity. This year I have orange mint, apple mint, peppermint, white sage, hyssop, anise and lemon verbena.

Please tell us about your book, To Fight Fire with Fire: Protection Magic.

Here is a little secret about the book. I do a lot of paranormal ghost hunting and things like that. My friends and family know that so they will call me to get rid of the spirits that are partying in their homes. So To Fight Fire with Fire is about protection magic but also includes ways to get rid of entities. People don’t realize that when they buy things from antique and garage sales, these things can have spiritual attachments that can wreak havoc in the home. So if people are dealing with the paranormal, this is a great book to have.

What is your favorite herb and stone protection combination?

I’m a huge lover of mixing sea salt with red brick dust. I ground down the bricks myself. I like peppermint and hyssop for protection herbs. Anytime I have come from a Pagan event or have been dealing with people who have questionable intentions, I take a bath in these to clear the gunk off of me. I also love magnetic hematite. I carry them in my jeep and keep them on me if I am going to places where people may be casting against each other. Magnetic hematite will neutralize bad energy.

Please tell us about your book, Sticks and Stones: A Book of Curious Spells and Unique Information.

This was my first leap into self-publishing. I took the things that I have learned throughout my life and put it in one book. It’s more about folk magic and hoodoo and is a good starting book for people who just want to see how it works and what to work with. A candle, an herb, an intention, a petition or psalm and sending it out into the world for fulfillment.

What’s your favorite spell in that book?

My favorite spell is the bloodhound spell. Many people do return to sender spells but the only problem with that is that unless you add that you want it made known who has cast against them then unless the target is very public about their woes, you’ll never know if it worked. When a bloodhound gets on a trail, they make all kinds of sounds. They have one of the loudest bays that you will ever hear and love the sound of their own voice so they are vocal the whole time. That’s what the bloodhound spell basically does. No matter how much this person tries to hide what they did, there is something coming along behind them making a ruckus. This way there is no way they can hide it. I come from a long history of working with dogs and bloodhounds are loud, they work with law enforcement and are almost impossible to escape.

SHETAN BELLY DANCE As an amateur belly dancer, I want to hear about your book, Sequins+Hot glue gun=Belly Dance Costumes (Volume 1).

I’ve been belly dancing for over 15 years and the hard thing for us plus size dancers is the costuming, finding ones that fit us well and looks nice on us. I was doing tons of performing and started performing with a variety and burlesque group and one of the dancers was showing the other girls how to make pasties. So I was watching and I was thinking that I can use that same concept to make my own appliques and I could make my own costumes. I was able to create pretty much any kind of outfit I wanted as well as in any color. They all fit really nice and I am only limited by my imagination when creating them.

Does it help large breasted women to create their own dance bras using the bras they already have?

Yes, you can find a bra that works for you and shows your boobage at its best to use. I like the Lane Bryant CACIQUE line. When they have the buy 2 get one free, I would save up my pennies to get them or you can get them from the clearance wrack to save more money. You want a firm cup with underwire to support you. Then you pick the color and shape of the appliques and create your bra. The book has templates that you can copy and cut out. Just be sure to find a bra that supports and enhances you. Naturally how much you can apply depends on the size of the bra. You can fit a lot more on larger bras than smaller ones.

I am working on an online course through Craft U and once it’s done, I will post it on social media. I am going to show how to create an entire belly dance costume including pointing out what kind of skirt enhances your figure, how to make cover ups from just a tee-shirt, etc. It’s a step by step course that will help you to create a complete costume custom made for you. There will also be videos on how to make Shisha mirrors and hip medallions which will be very helpful for people who have never done embroidery. Teaching this through video will be much more helpful to give people a visual to follow step by step.

You also recently went through a personal tragedy at the hands of a drunk driver. Please tell us about that.

It was actually about a year ago. My Mom and I were on our way to get something to eat and go to the store in my Jeep Wrangler. We were coming to the end of the road and were about 20 feet from the stop sign. A Jeep Grand Cherokee came flying around the corner and slid in the gravel right into my car, knocking it 4 feet to the side. I knew he wanted to run and I told him I would chase him down if he did. I had my Mom call my Dad who was just down the road and the police. I could smell the alcohol on his breath as he made up all kinds of excuses. He offered to just give me his phone number and let his friends fix the fender but I refused because I knew there was more damage than just the fender. My father came and we both blocked him in so he couldn’t leave the scene. He gave us a fake phone number which I told him was not going to work so I took a picture of his license plate. My Dad informed him that the police had been called. As soon as he heard that, he jumped back into his truck and drove over the embankment to get away. The police arrived a few minutes later and recognized the description that I gave of him. Apparently this same man had done this 3 times previously and the police knew where he lived so they had a car waiting for him when he got home. He blew twice the legal limit when they gave him the breathalyzer and the worse part was he had no license and no insurance.

What made me even angrier is that this accident caused me to have a miscarriage. When we went to court, his wife who was pregnant was there which made the blow even worse. He ruined my vehicle and took something that was irreplaceable to me, especially now that I am in my forties. It’s been a huge struggle and a yearlong process trying to keep tabs on him. The court ordered him to pay me $3800 just to make the repairs and he didn’t pay it. He didn’t show to his parole meetings and had a bench warrant placed against him. I knew the trailer park that he lived in and had to do my own investigative work to see when he was there and called the police to go pick him up when he was. He went to jail for 30 days and was ordered again to pay me by a certain date which of course he didn’t do. So they issued another bench warrant but he fled the state. When I told the police they said there was nothing they can do until he comes back into our state. Drunk driving should be considered to more of a huge offense than it is and they really let people slide on it. This man has done this repeatedly and next time he may kill someone. Now I have to do all of my own detective work to seek justice.

What would you like to see happen to this man?

I would like for him to pay me what he owes and also to pay restitution to everyone he has done this too. I want to see him punished. He should sit in jail and have the knowledge that he cost someone the life of a loved one eat away at him for the rest of his time on earth.

Aside from the physical and emotional trauma, how has this impacted you financially?

My medical bills were taken care of through my health insurance but my jeep is still damaged. The windshield is cracked thanks to being showered with gravel, broke my lights, there’s structural damage to my tire that could cause a blow-out. The tire alone was $400. The fender is a $1500-2000 part. He also damaged the gear assembly box because of the way his vehicle pushed mine sideways. He made the decision to drink and drive without a license or insurance but he had enough money to move his family out of state and fix the damages to his own vehicle and not pay me a cent.

He lived in the same trailer park as my cousin and aunt and I went to visit them. As I came out, I caught his wife letting the air out of the tires of my jeep. I confronted her and she started screaming obscenities at me and took off. I had to file a police report against her too. Thankfully I had witnesses because she tried to file a report against me saying I was harassing her.

You’re a travel writer, aren’t you?

Yes, that’s one of the reasons why I have my fingers crossed for my jeep until I can get the money to repair it so I can keep doing what I love which is being a travel writer. I also am working on books on cryptozoology and the paranormal as well as my Pagan series of books.

I would really love to go to this convention that’s 3-5 hours away but I have to make sure that at least somebody I know will be home in case my car breaks down. It makes it hard because you want to be mobile and get your job done and earn your income but now I have to worry if my jeep can make it there and back or if I have to cry myself to sleep about it.

I understand that you have contributed to many charity events, would you please tell us about them?

One of my biggest things I did was when I was running belly dance shows within the local communities was I would pay it forward by giving local new dancers a chance to have stage time. We did monthly shows and we would accept donations each month for different charities. We did this for three years under the name Motor City Belly Dance. We donated to the Humane Society, Make a Wish, Toys for Tots and other local charities. We also donated to Space Walk which is for the homeless and did shows to raise money for both animal and human based charities.

Since you have helped so many with the knowledge you share in your books and charitable contributions, how can others now help you through this crisis?

I do have a crowd funding site set up through YOUCARING that I created with the hope of receiving enough donations to fix my car so I can continue to move forward despite what has happened to me.  I really do need to have my jeep repaired and am reaching out for help to cover the considerable cost to fix it. Anyone who wants to make a donation can do it by clicking here:

Despite what happened to you, you have exhibited inspiring strength. Please tell us how you stay so strong?

I try to keep that positive outlook on life because it’s very hard to go to that dark, negative place and only dark and negative comes back to you when you do. I study the law of attraction and try to keep my ranting and ravings to a close circle of friends who know what I am going through. I attribute my strength mostly to my belief system and knowing how strong my parents are. My Mom is the bear curator for the North American Bear Center and works with live bears three times her size and my Dad is the main caregiver for my younger brother who has a head injury. Just seeing how they deal with life and how strong they are really propels me forward.

What final words would you like to share with our audience?

If you want to get to know me better, FaceBook is great and you can also find me on twitter. My books are available to purchase on Amazon. I am also working on a couple of different sites including a podcast and blog on the paranormal called Into the Liminal Abyss. Liminal means between spaces where you find most paranormal activities and the abyss is this vastness where everything comes from.  I am hoping to launch them in October. I am also working on a book project that documents the stories and legends of the water monsters in the Great Lakes. There are so many different stories surrounding them. Anyone who has any stories they would like to share, please contact me. I’m going to spotlight each of the Great Lakes, their depths and what’s currently living them. I am going to include the Native American tribes of the Great Lake’s stories of water monsters and spirits and document any sightings of these creatures. One in particular is a snake being with a moose head.  I’m going to go on a mission to talk to park rangers to see if moose actually swim in the Great Lakes. They may be swimming from one of the small islands to Lake Superior. I’m also documenting the aquatic fossil records of the Great Lakes to see what actually lived in them millions of years ago and examine the possibility that some of these creatures still exist. So I’ve got quite the interesting summer coming up and I’m really looking forward to it.

PBN Blues Series: “Shut Down Turn Off ” – Little River Band

Clients come and go, but some of them stay with us.  The ones that are the hardest are the ones that follow us home.  Not literally a client accompanying us to our domiciles, no.  I am referring to a case that just won’t let us go on with our days without thinking back to it.  Some part of it just seems to worry at us and we cannot let it go.

Self care and the ability to shut the book on the day is a big part of what it is to be a balanced person, and a successful magickal vendor/worker.  You come into contact with hundreds of people throughout the year.  Taking home spiritual contamination, and the worries of the world, will not allow you to be healthy and whole and effective.  You must draw the line, or be drawn down into an abyss of your own making.

As we do in this series, let us look at a scenario that speaks to this point.

The less healthy way to process this case

Ajanay W. has come to you with a serious problem.  She began a working over a month ago, under the advice of a friend with a book.  She did not do a divination, so was completely surprised that her life has now imploded.  Not only has she lost the objective she sought to keep, but she has suffered a huge personal set back.  Your heart bleeds for her and you begin to work together on her options, and select some appropriate tools and plans.

In this particular case, she decided to go for a the job position of a coworker.  She felt she was better qualified for the position.  Ajanay W.  did a petition spell and accompanied it with lamp magick.  Unfortunately for her, she did not word it correctly.  She also did not put in a way to undo what she had done.  She has now lost her job, been offered a job for half the pay at another company, and is seen as a troublemaker at her old one.

Ajanay W.  has come to you to try to fix her situation.  Not only did she not follow her friend’s advice, you strongly suspect that she will not follow yours.  You try to make sure you explain clearly what she needs to correct and wish her well.

For the next week, you find yourself thinking about Ajanay W..  You wonder if she is using the tools she purchased correctly.  You ask yourself if you could have added anything.  You replay your conversations in your mind and second guess yourself.  Even after knowing you were correct in what you did, you still keep worrying about her and her progress.  You even think of her at home.  You cannot let it go, and decide to just let it work its way out of your thoughts naturally.

A way that may be a better for your well-being

Before she does anything else, you put together a clearing bath mix for her. You advise her to reconstruct her petition, and then deconstruct it according to a standard technique.  You then advise her to switch from the lamp to a candle so that she can use small incremental changes to her course.  Because they burn for a shorter time, it will be easier to spot issues with her workings more swiftly and make appropriate adjustments.

That night, you find yourself thinking a lot about Ajanay W.  You find yourself bothered by recurrent thoughts of her welfare.  You recognize this is not the way you can maintain your separation from your business life.   You decide to create an affirmation that you repeat several times that ends the day for you.

Example:   And now it comes, the end of the day.  The cares of work are put away.  – Kenya Coviak/Mistress Belladonna

Short and sweet, but it is still effective.  Yours may be a lot longer.   For people who do ongoing work for clients, it will have to be customized to suit your situation.  But the idea is the same.  You also take the added steps of using a cleansing bath and an earth jar spell to shut down the unnecessary connections between you and Ajanay W.

You cannot pour energy from an empty cup, and in order to not leak, you must hold yours upright.  This means not letting others concerns tip you off-balance.  Work time is work time.  Let the laborer rest when the work day is complete.

PBN Blues Series: “Who do You Love” – George Thorogood

There are times when power plays are important, in life and in the magickal/spiritual world.  There really are enemies out there who come after people.  Yes, sometimes it really is you against the world.

Clients, and even other practitioners, may come to you when they cannot lift the workings cast against them.  They may feel hexed, cursed, crossed, or any number of other colorful terms for feeling that they are being attacked magically and/or spiritually.  Witchcraft of the Mouth is the most common form.  So is candle working.  Once the choice has been made on how to counter these things, and this is of course after ascertaining if they even exist, there should always be a follow-up working.

The follow-up is like tying up loose ends.  It sweeps away the debris, and clears the road for progress.  It also facilitates and environment for healing of the client.  After battle, the medics always come in to patch, but long-term care is important for a proper recovery.

When working with your client, you may be tempted to do success work right away.  While this is not necessarily wrong, it can be incomplete.  If they are still emotionally and mentally compromised from the attacks against them they will be hindered.  Experience advises you to suggest clearing work, path opening work, and the critical task of building up their defenses and confidence.  Why help them fight if you do not provide the tools needed to mount a good strong level of protection and defense?  When a person neutralizes malevolent spells and workings, without sending a strong message, it sometimes becomes more dangerous and emboldens the adversaries to up the stakes.  In these cases, it is important to advise the client of ALL options.

Let’s look at a case where this comes into play.

Timone V. has been beaten down for a long time.  She has always managed to make things work, no matter how unhappy she may have been with her current project by constantly bending and doing the work that other don’t do.  She even has not made an issue when others came in at the last-minute to do a minor touch on the finished project in order to take credit for the work.

But recently, she hit the wall and reached her limit and spoke up.  Within record time, forces and working were cast against her in an attempt to compel her into submission.  Quietly,  detractors organized and set about a whisper chain to destroy her.  Being a practitioner herself, she was hesitant about acting rashly, so decided to seek an objective opinion.

Timone V. came to your shop and gave you a breakdown of her situation.   You joined together in deciding the best course of action.  You consulted with her in choosing work to stop gossip, to break any compulsions, and to clear her roads.  She did not wish to attack anyone, just to defend.  This was successful, however the attacks resumed and she found herself right back in the same dire straits of being assailed from all sides.  In fact, it became worse, as her enemies doubled down and increased their workings against her.  Now you find yourself in a quandary of what the correct action will be.

Quick and easy, and a little cheesy

You decide to use the honey jar method, as that is the new “go-to” panacea in folk magick popularity.  Using what you have prepackaged on the shelf, you quickly assure her that this is all she needs to fix her situation.   You see no need to explain the principles behind what you are doing, and assure her that her situation will be fixed with this easy remedy.  You see no need for subsequent work.  After all, if she is a practitioner, she should know all the forms of spells anyway.  She leaves your shop, unsure as to why this will work.

Tombstone hand time, or empowering the unsure practitioner/client

Timone V. has been beaten down for a long time.  She has always managed to make things work, no matter how unhappy she may have been with her current project by constantly bending and doing the work that other don’t do.  She even has not made an issue when others came in at the last-minute to do a minor touch on the finished project in order to take credit for the work.

Timone V. came to your shop and gave you a breakdown of her situation.   You joined together in deciding the best course of action.  You consulted with her in choosing herbs to make a powder to stop gossip, to break any compulsions, and to clear her roads.

You explain that it is like going into a boxing ring and just holding up the gloves to trying to block punches.  Eventually, that person will get worn down, be slow to move,  and be pummeled.  This makes no sense.  The fact that the person does not want to fight does not matter, the opponent will keep swinging until they take them down.  In order to survive the fight, the proper course of action is to block AND strike.  This way, you defend, counter, and have a chance to make it to the end without being on your back and at your opponent’s mercy. If you knock them out, all the better.

Self preservation must be the first law.

Timone V. sees the wisdom of this and decides that it is time to end this cycle of conflict.  She decides to defend herself and also send a clear message of strong defense.  She designs a working that allows her to control the measure of retaliation and attack so that it stays within what she deems the limits of fairness according to her belief system.

In this case, ritual tools are incorporated into the sale.  These include a huge bag of Devil’s Shoe String that will be added to the anointing oil for cord working – turns out she is a textile worker, and some Witch’s Grass.  Items she usually had no call to utilize are now a part of her stratagems.  You have a variety of wares and this enables you to meet her needs.  You also supply her the chance to order additional items from your catalogs.  This extra mile will assure repeated visits and an opportunity to build her magickal toolbox.

You assemble the components and she makes sure she has the tools she needs to empower her working before she leaves.  You client is satisfied and confident, her faith in her own right to defend herself restored.  She also has a new level of faith in her Pagan business owner as well.  You watch her leave, and hear the Thunder in her steps.

The MoonFire Workings – Devotion, Manifestation, Promulgation and Education

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

“They shall gather my children into their fold: they shall bring the glory of the stars into the hearts of men.” Liber Legis 1:15

During 2013, my magnificent partner in crime, love and magick and I wrote and performed a series of twelve public rituals in a de-sanctified little gothic country church in the middle of nowhere near Kalamazoo, Michigan. Each ritual was loosely based on the prevailing zodiac sign and ruling god. We also performed some of them at other gatherings in the southwest Michigan area. These were the MoonFire Workings and this is their story.

Used with permission
Paul and Pat at ConVocation 2016

The story begins long ago during the heyday of the east coast Wiccan movement. My lovely partner, Pat, started an originally eclectic coven that was first adopted by trainers from Athanor, a Celtic Shamanic Order and then began initiations through an Alexandrian HPS, from the “Du Bandia Grasail” (DBG) tradition, whose initiations came directly from Alex Sanders and is the first documented Alexandrian Coven in the USA.  Ironically, both lines of trainers traced their origins back to this same origin.  Pat later also joined “The Order of Ganymede (OG)  an Alexandrian Chhonioi organization also originating from the same lineage.  The order is very Hellenistic in nature harboring a deep appreciation of Ceremonial Magick with the Cabalistic teachings of Dion Fortune having a large influence.  Pat has always had a deep regard for Crowley and Thelema, and as many know, ceremonial Magick and Thelema is a major component of the foundation of Gardner’s system of Wicca.

When I met Pat, I started spending substantial time in southwest Michigan where she lives and which is now both our home. She would take me to the various local gatherings. These were much simpler and rustic than the quality of ritual found on the east coast, and of course in ritual groups like the OTO. Therefore, Pat and I decided to write and perform a ritual for a local Yule gathering that would combine elements of both Ceremonial Magick and Traditional Wicca, to show what dramatic ritual could be when “rightly performed with joy and beauty”.  We wrote a Yule 2012 ritual celebrating the sun moving into Capricorn, using a goodly quantity of Pan imagery and texts. The ritual included the Star Ruby, a traditional Wiccan circle opening, the Hymn to Pan, reading of Liber A’ash and more.

The yule ritual had quite the effect!! Some loved it, others sadly lacked knowledge of the correspondences used in the ritual and so it went over their heads, one or two were uncomfortable with the ceremonial content and were ignorant of the huge impact Crowley and his works had on Gerald Gardner and Wicca.

Goaded on by the positive feedback, and with a grim determination to vanquish ignorance, we started to plot other deeds….

We felt called to restart Pat’s old coven and combine Wicca and Thelema plus Traditional Witchcraft and other powerful currents. We had attended the Occult Conference in Glastonbury (UK) a few months before where members of the British OTO, Wiccans, Druids and Chaotes agreed that well-meaning but uneducated solitary practitioners were dumbing down the Western Esoteric Tradition, and that the various mystery paths should recognize and celebrate their common foundation and heritage, and work together to preserve the heritage instead of bickering at each other. This resonated strongly with us, Pat being a Wiccan with a strong appreciation of Thelema, and me being a Thelemite who had practiced Wicca before getting interested in Ceremonial Magick and Traditional Witchcraft.

MoonFire at Rite of Brigid, OTO Chicago 2015
MoonFire at Rite of Brigid, OTO Chicago 2015

As we were starting to discuss and plan, a friend of Pat’s who runs an earth based pagan church in a cool little gothic church in the middle of nowhere asked us for ideas on how to get more people to attend her church… So we decided to write a series of twelve zodiac rituals, using our Yule/Capricorn ritual as a model and start performing them publicly at her church to draw people in.

The first ritual, the Rite of Aquarius, was written and performed in January 2013 at Eclectic Path Earth Resources in Otsego, MI. It was followed by a Pisces Moon ritual that included a full-blown Wiccan drawing down of the moon and five-fold kiss plus the Lesser Banishing Ritual Of The Pentagram. A Mars/Aries ritual that included an Invoking Ritual of the Hexagram for Mars and used war like verses from Liber Legis chapter III followed.  Then we created a Venus Ritual that included grimoire Magick from “The Consecrated book of Black Venus,” a mercury ritual that included Liber Israfel, and so on and more through the whole year. Writing, planning and performing an 18 to 20 page hour-long ritual a month was exhausting, but also is a very magical and fulfilling rite of manifestation and will. The Rites of Eleusis, Holy Books Of Thelema, Orphic Hymns, Liber Reguli, The Star Ruby and more were all proudly put on display for those who have never witnessed traditional group magick before

Attendance started modestly with about 8 people, and rose to a high of some 35. We invited some of the regulars to be side officers, some of these asked for more training and exposure. This led to us inviting the most keen to form the beginnings of the new MoonFire coven.

As detailed knowledge of the occult arts, correspondences, et al, was lacking in some, the original rituals were written to include a great deal of explanation as to why certain tools, candles, or weapons were in use. They were also designed to subtly expose people to Thelema and Alexandrian Wicca without being evangelical. The rituals were therefore educational and taught people the use of correspondences in ritual magick, and indeed what good and deep ritual magick should be like.

MoonFire at Grand Rapids Pagan Pride Day
MoonFire at Grand Rapids Pagan Pride Day

The MoonFire coven is now very active in SW Michigan. As well as private rituals, initiatory work, and our public zodiac rites, we have spread our wings and started performing rituals in Chicago for the OTO, also Pagan Pride days in Grand Rapids and Detroit, Blackberry Farm gatherings and more. We joined the Covenant Of The Goddess. Our public Esbat remains very popular and is now its own tradition – running consistently at New Moon in Kalamazoo every full moon weekend for over a year now. We still occasionally perform some of our original twelve zodiac rituals. Our members have added to our cannon – writing rituals that are now joyously performed yearly. Many of have had the guts (and our bottomless thanks) to step up and be side officers at public rituals. NOT BAD FOR A FIRST THREE YEARS!!!……

What do I see in my crystal ball for the next three years….. I see us opening a store and pagan church/temple serving Michiana… I see more public rituals at the new store and elsewhere. I see us playing a bigger role in local pagan life such as Convocation, Pagan Fest, Pagan Pride, Pagan charities, interfaith out-reach. I see us starting an OTO body to serve Michiana. I see some of our initiates achieve their 3rd degree and start hiving to form new covens to celebrate our lineage and tradition but also continue the spirit of innovation. I see new coveners joining to bring their own spark to replace those who hive. For those who have been with us since the early days – we love you and thank you for abiding with us… To those that are new…. hold onto your hats – we’re just getting started……

Every MoonFire ritual is closed with a standard exultation composed of selected verses from Liber Legis, be it our public monthly esbats, or our private rituals or anything we do, and so I close this essay with the same.

“Beauty and strength, leaping laughter and delicious languor, force and fire, are of us. This is the law of the strong: this is our law and the joy of the world. The word of sin is Restriction. There is no bond that can unite the divided but love: all else is a curse. Be goodly therefore: dress ye all in fine apparel; eat rich foods and drink sweet wines and wines that foam! Also, take your fill and will of love as ye will, when, where and with whom ye will. Every man and every woman is a star. And Thou hast no right but to do what thou wilt.”

This IS a place of MoonFire.

Love is the law, love under will.

Learning to live the Tarot – Part 4

By Ascarani

This is part 4 of a 4 part series on learning to read the tarot intuitively.

Welcome back to Learning to Live the Tarot.  Today we will look at the final cards in the deck, the Major Arcana Cards.

I have actually seen card decks made up of only the Major Arcana Cards.  These 22 cards can absolutely be all you need to tell the story of light and find out the answers to your questions. Just like the suits and the Minor Arcana, the best way to get acquainted with the Major Arcana is to write their story. Take these cards from your deck and put them in order from 0/The Fool all the way up to ending with XXI (21) The World.

I have read many stories that have been written to tell the story through the Major Arcana Cards.  This is the story I see as I look through them:

We start out in our youth alive and unaware of the problems and difficulties we may face in the world (Fool). We believe that anything can be accomplished just like a magician waving his wand in the air to create miracles (Magician). Sure, we look to others for advice (High Priestess). As we go along and grow, we learn more about the truths of life and we become wiser (Empress). Often those who influence us change and we look for other opportunities in life (Emperor). Sometimes we even change our philosophies as we grow (Hierophant).  We find love which changes our perspectives (Lovers).  We also start to understand that part of the beauty of life is the journey itself (Chariot). In times of strife we look inward for our strength (Strength).

Other times we find that it is better to be alone and take time out to ponder the meaning of situations (Hermit). We never lose hope though realizing that there are always a lot of other options for us if we are willing to take the risk (Wheel of Fortune). Life teaches us that there are rules and sometimes there is no winner (Justice). It is in these moments that we seek further answers, sometimes turning the problem upside down to find a solution (Hanged Man). It is then we figure out that we must rebirth everything we believed, in fact we must let the old die and wither away to be reborn anew (Death). These are the times we must find our place of balance (Temperance).  We also learn to watch out for those who pretend to have our best interest at heart but are only concerned with themselves (Devil).  This is a turning point, all things may seem to explode around us but it is life getting our attention (Tower).

From this point of madness, we are asked to believe and to hope to move forward (Star). We have made it through the valley and are now able to follow our own instincts and trust our intuition (Moon). When we trust ourselves, we are moving into a state of joy (Sun). Now we can stop passing judgement on ourselves and others (Judgement). In the end, we hold our world on a silver platter and we are complete (World).
