Book Review: The Good Witch’s Guide : A Modern Day Wiccapedia of Magickal Ingredients and spells

Written by: Shawn Robbins and Charity Bedell, pub 2017 Sterling Publishing Co. 305pp

The Good Witch’s Guide is not your average, everyday introductory or advanced peep into the Craft. To be honest, owning quite a few of these guides, myself, I was used to the standard Wiccan/Witchcraft encyclopedia reference materials. Most of them, I find, are stuffy, and to be clear, I’m not a huge fan. When I cracked open this book, I was expecting this to be just another reference guide, however; I found myself pleasantly surprised. This book is a real page turner.

The Good Witch’s guide is full of wonderful spells, incantations.

There is a guide to crafting your own personal Magick and yes, stones, essential oils, colors and herbs.

It has everything from Witchy Wisdom, rituals and formulas, spirituality, folklore, health and health remedies.

Of course, there are sections dedicated to candle Magick, brewing your own potions, tinctures and salves.

This book is jam packed with all kinds of recipes for Sabbats and special occasions.

Want to know how other Witches are casting their own versions of these spells? There’s even a section dedicated to that!

There are tons of traditional spells that are tried and true and all of the “how-to’s” that go along with them.

In this authors humble opinion, this may very well become the definitive guide for all who take the time to read it. The Good Witch’s Guide is a pleasure to read for the Beginner in the Craft all the way to your most Adept Student. It can be used strictly as a reference manual or can be read cover to cover without the monotony of other reference guides.

On a more personal note, this is one book is one that I will cherish and read again and again!

Witches Red Salt: Powerful Love Charm

Witches Redsalt:
A traditional Witches Love Charm

With tomorrow being Valentines day alot of people are thinking about love spells and love charms.  Love magic can be effective.  It can be used to attract a long term relationship, a sexual relationship, friendships and more.  Like with any spells love spells need to be made very specific.  You may find that if you target an individual that the relationship is not a healthy one and they end up being obsessive or controlling.  This is why it is best in love spells to gear them towards a specific type of person (meaning qualities, interests etc) rather than an individual.

With this in mind one of the most powerful love charms out there is Witches Red Salt.  Witches Red Salt is an herbal charm that is made out of roses, sea salt and other herbs associated with love such as cinnamon, dragons blood, and Apples (the peel or flower would be best here).  The goal of the Red Salt is to attract love first other additions depend on the individual witch.

Now that we know what Red Salt is used for let’s make an All Purpose Red Salt.  This witches Salt will ensure fidelity, attract love, happiness, and friendship, all things that are essential in a healthy relationship.  Once we have the Red Salt made we will take a look at how you can apply the red salt in a spell.  The first part of the entire process is the crafting and charging of the Red Salt.

The act of making the Red witches salt is a spell in itself.    When you are creating the salt you are directing, manipulating and focusing various energetic forces into the salt.  You are working with the energy of the herbs and your own emotional energetic forces to create an item used to direct those energetic forces for a change in your life or the life of another person.  You are effectively working a spell through the process of making the Witches Red Salt.

Crafting the Red Salt

Materials:

4 cups Sea Salt *Any salt will work.  Sea salt is best.  Kosher salt works as well.  Pink Himalayan salt will add to the spell from its color.  (Salt is used to cleanse and remove blocks in the way of attracting love)
1 Cup Sugar (to sweeten them to you)
1 Cup Red Rose Petals (for love)
1 Cup Dried Apple Peels (Love)
1/4 cup Catnip (Happiness)
3 Tablespoons Dragonsblood (lust and love)
2 Tablespoons Ground Cinnamon (lust and love)
1 Tablespoon Ground Allspice (Fidelity)
Red Candle (for love)
Green Candle (For the herbal spirits)
White Candle (Spiritual force in general)
Mixing Bowl
Mortar And Pestle
Rose Quartz (self love and friendship)
Jar or Container with a lid to store your salt in

Spell:

On your altar place the three candles in a triangle with the white at the top point and the red and green at the bottom point.
Place the mixing bowl in the center of the candles
Around the Mixing bowl lay out the Rose, Apple Peels, Catnip, Dragonsblood, Cinnamon, and Allspice.
As You light each candle state:

“I call upon the spirits of the herbal Green
The powers from the worlds unseen
Lend me your blessings on this night
Bring me the powers of love shining bright
Empower this charm today
Bring us love which will stay”

Next you take the  Salt and pour it into the mixing bowl
Pick up the Rose Petals and Hold the Rose petals over the candles.
As you hold the rose petals over the candles feel the powers of the spirit awaken.
Thank them silently and put them into the Mortar and Pestle.
As you grind the Rose petals into the finest powder that you can  see love surrounding you.
Feel the energy of love flowing from your hands into the salt
Once the Roses are ground add them to the red salt
Stir the roses into the salt clockwise once again visualizing love.  See the salt covered in a bright red light that is warm and welcoming (Red being love, desire and passion)
Take the Apple Peels and repeat the process using the Mortar and Pestle.
Once the Apple Peels are ground add them into the salt again stirring clockwise visualize the red light
Take the Catnip and awaken it as you did with the Apple Peels and Rose.
Once again grind the Catnip into as fine of a powder as you can and add it to the salt stirring clockwise
Awaken the Dragons blood, and add it to the salt followed by awakening the Cinnamon, and Allspice together.
Next add the sugar
Now that all the herbs are combined continue to stir the Red Salt together.
As you stir the salt visualize the salt glowing with red light.
While you stir and blend chant the following chant five times:

“Love come to me
One that freely loves me
Bring a lover that’s true
Open me to a love that’s new”

Once you feel that the energy has reached its max potential place your hands over the salt and draw a pentacle and a heart sealing in the energy
Pour the Charged Salt into your jar or Container
Cover With the lid and place the Rose Quartz stone on the Lid to continue to charge the Salt
Extinguish the Candles

The red Salt is now ready to use.  Simply take out a small amount as needed for spell and ritual work.

Working With Red Salt

Now that we have made the red salt it’s time to talk about how we can work with the witches salt. It is important to remember that witches have always been very practical.  They worked with what they had on hand and when they could.   Working with red witches salt is designed to be practical and easy.

Working with red salt is fairly easy. The salt is already charged and ready to go.  You can simply use the red salt as it is.  That’s right.  Since the red salt is already charged all you need to do now is give it a specific direction to work in.  You can sprinkle the red salt into your shoes with the intent to attract love with each step.  Just sprinkle the salt and say your intent for love.    If you are the type to be a little more formal with your application of powders the following two spells are more structured ways to use the sprinkle in your shoes trick.

Walk to manifest Love
Materials:

Red Salt
Your Shoes
A piece of Paper with your petition written on it

Spell:

On the paper write out your desire to have love.  Be sure to include any specific desires and qualities about the type of person you are looking for.  Things like hobbies, music, general interests, etc as well as personality traits (supportive, strong, good with animals etc) down
Once the paper has been written on sprinkle a little bit of the Red salt over the Paper and state:
“”May every step I take this day bring true love my way”. ”
Fold the paper towards you with the red salt and place in your shoes.
Then as you walk every day the energy in your steps will activate the salt.
Your walking ever day will attract the energy that you are sending out through your steps.

Dancing for Love
Materials:

Red Salt

“Every move I make tonight brings a lover that is right”.
The more you dance the more energy you will gather and direct.
The salt will act as a focal point directing the energy from dancing and the salt into the earth through your feet.

There are other ways that you can sprinkle witches salt and form a love spell.  Many men and women use lotions and colognes or perfumes to male ourselves feel good about ourselves and to feel attractive.  You can use red salt to strengthen the feelings of attractiveness when you work with those products.  The goal in this application is to maximize how you feel attractive so it gains the attention of those who you are attracted to.

Makeup and Lotion Attraction Spell
Materials:
Red Salt
Lotions and or any Beauty supplies (this includes hair styling supplies as well as makeup and colognes)

Spell:
Gather all of your Beauty Supplies together
Envision yourself in a pink (for self love) and red (for general love and attractiveness)
As you pick up each item see a red and pink light entering the items until they glow.
Once they are glowing pick up the red salt and sprinkle it over the item stating
“Love come to me freely
One who accepts me
A love that’s meant be”

Now these items will be charged for the next month for both self love and romantic love.
Simply use them as you would normally.

Notes:
Repeat the spell once a month to keep the items empowered
Perform the spell as needed when items are replaced

These spells should help you get started.  Working with witches salt can be as simple or as complex as you would like it to be.  The charm is powerful and ready to use.  Be wise.  If you are unsure about performing a spell or working do a reading and look to find out if its a good time to do the spell.  If its acceptable to perform the spell get to work.  If not do a reading and you’ll find out what you can do instead.

If you do not want to make your own, of if you can’t find the supplies there are many places you can find Red Witches Salt
Try:
Mystic Echoes Red Witches Salt
Arte’s and Crafts Hoodoo Powders and Salts

For supplies Try:
Mystic Echoes Herbs and Curios
Arte’s and Crafts Apothecary
3 Crowsmagick Herbs, resins, and Roots

Best of luck finding love.

PBN Blues Series: “Stop Doggin Me” – Johnnie Taylor

Welcome back to the series.  Today the subject is what part your engagement skills play in your service to your customer.  We look at how to determine what may be best for a client who is seeking to gain, or regain, the respect and regard of their peers and circle of friends.  They  come to you for assistance in approaching this issue.  As a purveyor of  magickal solutions, this  happens quite often.

Let us stop for a moment and consider what it is the person is actually seeking.  Are they looking for a quick spell kit?  Are they trying to do some long-term work?  Is this person a person who likes candle magick?  What is their preference and end game?  Listening is important.

Here are a couple of scenes that will highlight how one shop owner may handle this situation.  In both, the client will present similar information until the professional engages.  The conversation, and transaction, will change accordingly.

Not listening to the client, or how to ensure they never return

Erin G. walks into your shop with a mission on her mind.  She has had enough of her life in its current state, and now is committing to change it.  One of the main areas that she feels is challenging her is the perpetual feeling that she is being trodden underfoot by everyone around her.

Her workplace is the worst daily example.   She wants to be recognized for her ideas and projects.  She experiences the pain of being ignored, passed over, and  ownership of her ideas is appropriated.  She now leaves work undone and maintains silence during meetings.  Fear of oppression overtakes her spirit.  A friend’s referral brings her to your door for some Conquering Glory soap and an amethyst necklace.

You  decide that Erin G. is in just the right place.  You confidently state to her that you have the perfect candle set for her needs.  This oil and candle, dressed and blessed by you, will work nicely.

Erin G. tells you that she does not like burning candles.  She also shares that her living situation is such that she is not allowed to have open flames in her home.  This is a condition of her lease.

You inform her that you know best in these matters and that candle work is the best course, as it is more dynamic in nature.  A little deception to her landlord should not matter, as her happiness is more important than a bit of dishonesty.  If she commits to her goal then why would she question the information you just gave her, after all?

You walk to the shelves and grab the red glass encased candle in your sights.  You place it on the counter in front of her and begin to write down the oils and directions on burning it.  You notice the subtle breeze flutter the paper’s edge.  That was the gust from the door being closed forcefully as Erin G. exits through it.

A little more listening, a little less “opinining”

You immediately change your direction of methodology.  Listening to the client is key to understanding what is possible.  With more discussion, you find the property has a pond right behind her house.  Erin G. chose her home because of this pond.   You also notice that she has an angel pendant.  Observation is part of being a good business person.  You decide that water working is in order.

You suggest she work with the Arch Angel Gabriel.   A small garden of white flowers would be in order.  You steer her to a selection of the appropriate incense and oils in order to both consecrate the space, and purify her.  Because she is interested in working more with angels, you also sell her a book on angel magick.  As a lagniappe, you throw in a small citrine as a gift.

Erin G. completes her purchases and leaves the store with a serene and hopeful outlook.  Your engagement allowed you to customize the approach to her situation accordingly.  You have also forged a rapport with your customer because you respected her needs and wants.

PBN Blues Series: “Manish Boy” – Muddy Waters

by Kenya Coviak

As magickal workers, it is not uncommon for us to run across every form of the human experience.  Love, money, success, sex, health, and more are equally likely to walk into our realm of client concerns.  Having a full line of product choices in stock, as well as individual tools and components, is beneficial both to us and the customer.

Today, we look at sexy times.  Dealing with sex is always fraught with emotions and esteem issues for the client.  The fact that they are coming to you is an indication that their desire has motivated them to the point of action on a potentially embarrassing situation.  Most times, they will simply grab a reference book or a kit and purchase it without commentary.  But other times, you will find yourself in the role of adviser and sex therapist (if you are unlucky).

So now, we look at a scenario that can go a couple of ways at least.  First we shall have a scene where it may not be the best course of action.  Then a scene where it may be a better course of action.  Here we go.

What may, or may not, be the best way to go about this situation

Jody D. is a regular client at your shop.  He comes in from the auto plant every other Friday with the same order for Steady Work materials, and Fast Luck.  You have a pleasant rapport with him.  However, on this day he appears nervous and fidgety.  Instead of his usual easy mannerisms, he hangs back until all the other customers have been served before speaking to you.

Jody D. explains that he is having problems with his “nature”.  He just cannot please the ladies like he used to do and feels his body has let him down.  He has seen the doctor, and has decided against the little blue miracle pill.  He has come to you for another solution in the spiritual/magickal realm.

You grab some some deer velvet, burdock, and a few other things and send him on his way, telling him to wear it around his neck.  Quick cash for you.  You also offer to sell him an oil to use to supplement the blend.  No further discussion needed.  You have made the sales, and he has gone about his way, never to speak of this between you two again.  But did you give the best service?

Now, let’s try this another way

Jody D. is a regular client at your shop.

You know this is a delicate situation.  Your rapport is one you do not wish to jeopardize by being overly dismissive OR familiar with you client.  Respecting his emotional state, you come away from the front counter to another area of the store to give a greater appearance of  privacy.  You ask him how long this has been going on, and if there were any events that he can remember that happened around this time.

He does not really remember events.  But he does share how long.  You ask him to give you a moment to check on something in the back.  You do a quick divination, or intuition check, away from his presence so that you can be more objective.

After having a moment to think, you come back to Jody D.  and ask him what it is he is actually feeling he would like to do.  Would he like to burn candles, use oils, or use herbs.  If you offer the service, you may offer to do work for him, or let him burn the candles at your store altars.  You may also, if he is open, give him some affirmation, chant, or psalm, to work.  This depends on both your, and his, spiritual tradition.

Under no circumstances do you guarantee results.  You tell him that he did not get this way over night, so it will not be solved overnight.  You stress that this is a continual working, and that only he can decide how effective it is, and how long it needs to be repeated.

But you also, as a practitioner, know the power of positive expectancy.  Therefore you let him know that the fact that he has chosen a course of decisive action and control will greatly boost his endeavors.  This will also restore some of his confidence.  Remind him that spiritual work also needs physical anchoring in the mundane world.  He is to make lifestyle changes that will facilitate good health.  He must research these, as this is empowering him as well.  You have also projected to him that he is strong in his conviction, and that this strength will make his work strong as well.

Jody D. leaves with his purchases that you have both agreed are within his budget and comfort zone.  You let him know that if he wishes, he can discuss this with you again in a few weeks, but you will not be prying.  He leaves feeling hopeful, and you have served your customer well.  It is hopeful that he will be successful in his quest to improve his “nature”.  A good song to play if you do a visualization for him would be “Manish Boy” by Muddy Waters.

The Healer’s Shadow: inner healing through Shadow Work

Jackie Burkeen

When one thinks of the word “healing”, one would assume bright white lights, crystals, Reiki, Angel Touch, anything that involves the category of love and light. While they’re all wonderful tools to help with healing ourselves and others, they’re not the one and only way. Shadow Work is what a magickal practitioner does in order to advance further in their practice. Spells can go wrong when one is not in the right state of mind and intention, especially in the most unconscious level of their psyche. Your shadow harbors those little nit picks you hate about yourself, your inner demons you sought to suppress while presenting to the world what you want to show. The thing about your shadow is it has a habit to creep up and surface when you least expect it.

Gerrit Dou
Old Woman with a Candle – Gerrit Dou

Those who don’t face and embrace their shadow are often consumed by the demons within which can lead a life of playing the victim. Inner healing is a very broad subject, but the most basic way to start is through the use of shadow work. It can be as simple or as complicated as you wish it to be.

A good way to work with your shadow is the use of fear facing methods. Are you afraid to push further in your career? Sit down and make a list of ways to spring up confidence within yourself so you can push your boundaries to advance. A fear of letting go?

Find mundane ways such as cleaning and decluttering your house and infuse the energy of what you want gone with what you throw out. Afraid to fall in love? Open your heart to not only to the ability to love yourself, but others as well.

The truth is, healing starts from within. Looking inward is often a very exciting yet frightful journey we can take. Change is the one thing we all fear the most, but no change can lead to a life of stagnation and unfulfilled dreams. Change takes time and the will to do so, you will get discouraged especially if you’re someone who desires instant gratification. Change can come as quick as a few months or take as long as many years. Your desire is the key for how much you want to advance further in your endeavors to heal yourself.

One thing to know for certain, you can count on your shadow to always be by your side. Even when it cloaks itself in darkness, it will always be there. Embrace your shadow, for it has been by your side in your brightest days and your darkest hours. It harbors your truth, both sides you love and hate. Embrace your shadow, and let your inner healer’s journey begin.
